Planning approval secured for the regeneration of the Colin area

Strategic Planning is delighted to have assisted in the delivery of a significant planning approval for a new Town Centre for Colin in West Belfast. The area is one of five ‘Urban Villages’ which are being developed and coordinated by the Urban Villages Team within the Strategic Investment Board.

 The outline planning permission, which was approved by the Belfast City Council Planning Committee on Tuesday 17th May, is on a 21 hectare application site. It includes a range of new facilities for the local area including a multi-purpose community building, Belfast Rapid Transit Hub Building, Health Centre, Post Primary School, Residential, Retail, financial/professional services and other business uses. There will also be a new town square, recreational sports pitches, sports pavilions, formal play area and public park and public open space.

There are clear socio economic benefits associated with this development as the new services will result in much improved educational, health and social outcomes for an area which is currently ranked as one of the most deprived in Northern Ireland. The proposal will also help regenerate the local economy and is estimated to lead to the creation of around 200 much needed employment opportunities. These benefits are particularly welcome for the population in the major local housing areas s of Twinbrook, Poleglass, Lagmore and Kilwee.
