Maydown Gasification Plant

The proposal was for the construction of a new gasification facility for the treatment of refuse derived fuel (RDF) produced within the existing Waste Management site (Enviroparc). The facility was the first of its kind in Northern Ireland and formed part of the overall waste management process undertaken at the Maydown plant in Derry.

ISSUES ENCOUNTERED:

  • Lack of understanding about the proposal and the gasification process by stakeholders.
  • Application had stalled and there was a need to get it through the determination process.

OUR INVOLVEMENT:

We resolved the outstanding issues through direct negotiations with the planners to resolve outstanding issues and set out a clear progress timeline. We also consulted local representatives to ensure they were fully briefed on the project, which ensured the proposal gained the support and restricted objection to the proposal. Permission for the application was granted within six months of our engagement.
