Magilligan Prison Redvelopment

A proposed £150 million redevelopment of existing Magilligan prison site into a ‘state-of-the-art’ prison complex.

Issues Encountered

  • The site abuts numerous environmental designations and therefore any new prison development must not have any additional environmental impact to what is currently on site.
  • Given the condition of the current prison complex and the projected Northern Ireland prison population, there is a need to deliver a new prison within a strict timeframe.

Our Involvement

We were part of the successful bid team led by HLM Architects that won a design tender for the new prison complex.

We were responsible for advising the Northern Ireland Prison Service and HLM Architects on planning-issues, EIA related issues, concept and design issues and co-ordinating and managing the planning application, including a Pre-Application Discussion (PAD) process.
