EirGrid line uprates in Mayo, Galway and Wexford approved

Gravis Planning, working in conjunction with WSP, was delighted to contribute to recent planning approvals achieved on behalf of EirGrid for uprates to electricity grid infrastructure in two important corridors for the transmission system: the Castlebar-Cloon 110kV overhead line (OHL) between Counties Mayo and Galway, and the Crane-Wexford 110kV OHL in County Wexford. These are part of a comprehensive programme of line uprates that is ongoing across the country.
The Cloon-Castlebar uprate involves the replacement – or ‘restringing’ – of the existing line which is some 57 kilometres long. This meant replacing the existing OHL circuit conductor and wires with a new higher capacity conductor, including the installation of a new fibre communication connection. Also replaced were 53 wooden polesets and 39 steel masts with newer counterparts. The project required works at both the Cloon and Castlebar 110kV substations to accommodate the new infrastructure.
The Crane-Wexford uprate also involves the ‘restringing’ of the existing line in this location, which is approximately 23 kilometres long. This again meant replacing the existing OHL circuit conductor and wires with a new higher capacity conductor, alongside 23 wooden polesets. The project similarly required works at the Crane and Wexford 110kV substations for the new infrastructure.
Both of these projects will contribute to ensuring that Ireland’s transmission grid is equipped with the capacity to supply enough electricity to meet consumer demand and connect a growing number of renewable assets, which will provide clean energy to homes and businesses as we seek to decarbonise our society and economy in the transition to Net Zero.
