Planning permission secured for major Translink Park and Ride facility in Moira

7 March 2024

We are pleased to have secured planning permission on behalf of Translink for a new Park and Ride (P&R) facility in Moira, which will provide 445 free parking spaces for commuters seeking to leave their cars behind and use public transport to save money, reduce traffic congestion in our towns and cities and help save the environment on our collective journey toward Net Zero carbon emissions.

The new P&R facility will sit adjacent to Moira Train Station and service users travelling toward Lisburn and Belfast or toward Portadown and Dublin, two vital rail corridors in Northern Ireland. The 3.65-hectare site will be accessed via a new right hand turning lane on Station Road, which will be widened and designed to accommodate a pedestrian footway and crossing which connect the new P&R facility to the station.

The new facility will be safe and secure thanks to floodlighting and CCTV surveillance which will be powered sustainably by an array of solar panels located in the southern part of the site. A new cycle shelter is included to provide multi-modal transport options and encourage active travel. In line with Translink’s commitment to enhance and protect the local landscape and biodiversity, existing boundary vegetation is retained as much as possible and in places is augmented through the supplementary planting of appropriate species to integrate the facility into its rural setting.

Gravis provided both Planning and Strategic Communications services for this major infrastructure proposal, including the management of the planning application submitted to Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and the Pre-Application Community Consultation (PACC) process, which involved engaging with the local community and elected representatives to gain feedback on the proposed developments and promote its social, economic and environmental benefits.

We are proud to have been part of this project which is an essential step in making public transport more accessible to those living and working in the Moira area and demonstrates Translink’s leadership in this vital aspect of tackling climate change.
