The Proposal

The Department for the Economy is proposing a short duration Geothermal Demonstrator Project at Stormont Estate to learn more about geothermal technology.

Geothermal energy is defined as energy stored within the Earth that can be used to provide heat and produce electricity. Geothermal energy is a sustainable way of producing a continuous supply of low carbon, renewable heat due to the naturally occurring heat from the Earth. This geothermal energy can be used to heat and cool our homes and buildings as well as supporting industry and empowering our way of life.

In December 2021, the Department’s Energy Strategy was published and contained within the strategy was a recognition of the role that geothermal energy has to play in decarbonising how we heat and cool our homes and buildings.

The Department’s 2022 Energy Strategy Action Plan showed the commitment to developing and commencing delivery of a geothermal demonstrator project as part of its pathway to reach net-zero targets by 2050.

Geothermal technology is not as prevalent in Northern Ireland for domestic and commercial use as some of its more common renewable counterparts. It is for this reason that DfE are seeking planning approval for a Geothermal Demonstrator project at Stormont Estate.

Further information about the project can be found on the information boards contained on this webpage. You can comment on the proposals by filling out the digital feedback form below. Feedback provided is to the applicant and not to the planning authority for this proposal, namely Belfast City Council. Following the submission of a planning application, normal neighbourhood notification will be undertaken by the planning authority, presenting local people with an opportunity to make formal representations to the Council.

Please note that the consultation window for this project will close on Monday 12th June.
